The clothes we wear can have a strong psychological effect on how we feel about ourselves, and how others think about us.
— ‘My style, my way’ by Cindy Ann Peterson.
8 hours a day, 5 to 6 days of the week, every week, for most months of our working lives — that’s approximately the amount of time we spend in our workwear.
Trying to get dressed with a stuck zip or managing an extra-wrinkly & cumbersome fabric, can make the difference between a great morning & an irate one, which in turn can affect your mood going into the workday. This is true for every working day — and it’s just one example of the effect our work clothes, our ‘second skin’, can have on our internal psyche.
It’s high time that as working women, we now ask what our clothes can do for us — not just externally, but also psychologically, as we pursue our busy, on-the-go lives. While our workwear makes a great difference to how we are perceived at work, the buck does not stop there.
This begs the question — How hard does your workwear work for you?
Does it leave you unbothered or are you overly conscious & unable to focus on your actual work because of its inconveniences? Is it smart? Does it support your busy, on-the-go lifestyle? Or is it filled with fake pockets, gaping plackets & insecure fastenings? Is it versatile enough to fit you just as well as it fits the model? Does it give you the comfort, confidence & reassurance you need to slay the day?
At TBD, we create designs, giving due importance to this psychology. We like our workwear to be intelligent. It needs to be versatile enough for you to spend the least amount of time on picking a work outfit & getting dressed, without compromising on looking and feeling your sharpest. It needs to be supportive & utilitarian enough that you think about one thing & one thing only every morning — your career. Women’s workwear today, calls for big confidence that is projected from within & only supported by fashion. It needs to address how it makes the wearer feel, not just take care of how she looks. As ambitious women stepping up to make a mark, we go above and beyond to race towards our dreams & goals.
Just like a track-runner needs great trainers & feather-light spandex, we need workwear that supports our world-view & makes our fight against these inner challenges & outer obstacles pack the most confident punch from within.
